Questions flew past Josh’s head so quickly for the next several minutes, that it was all he and Jack Gaines could do to volley them.

Jack’s plan entailed staging what they would advertise as a major breakthrough in the cattle rustling case. It would be directly linked to Antonio’s testimony. They’d spread the word that arrests were imminent and leak a short list of names, which would put Antonio back in Bando Brown’s crosshairs. Their plan was dependent on the fact that Bando Brown would take measures to silence him — permanently. And their team would be on site to apprehend him when he did.

“I’ll do it.” Antonio’s easy and emphatic capitulation more or less decided the matter.

“But it’s so risky,” Lorelai wailed. “Can’t we find another way?”

“It’s alright, lass,” he soothed, glancing pointedly at her swollen belly. “I couldn’t save my own daughter, but I can still save you and your babe. Brown has been targeting your ranch for months, and there are plenty more ranches on his hit list. He’s not going to give up until he’s behind bars or in the ground.”

“I’ll do my part, as well.” Madeleine had performed a few unofficial nursing tasks at the orphanage, so she wasn’t a complete stranger to medical work. “I’ll have to study hard to prepare for the role, but I can do it.”

“Madeleine!” her husband groaned.

“A promise is a promise,” she reminded, catching and holding his gaze for an extended, emotion-charged moment. “I will always keep my promises, Josh. Every last one of them.” She’d made some promises to him, as well, that she intended to keep — to have and to hold, to love and to cherish, ’til death…
